Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association (SSFA) at Mayfair Lawn Bowling Club - June 16
Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association (SSFA) 55+
PROVINCIAL LAWN BOWLING GAMES
The Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association (SSFA) is a volunteer, non-government organization formed on December 7, 1984 in response to the need for an activity program for people fifty years of age and older. SSFA operates with funding from the Saskatchewan Lotteries and district fund
In March 2022, the SSFA Provincial President, approached myself to coordinate the provincial games for lawn bowling and to run the event. Although the SSFA Provincial Games were being held in Prince Albert, June 14-16, 2022, lawn bowling had to held in another location, as there are no greens in that city.
I approached the Mayfair Lawn Bowling Club to host the event and they readily agreed and chose to hold it on June 16th. It was decided to hold a one-day event so bowlers would not have to incur accommodation costs. Twenty bowlers registered for the games, 8 from Mayfair, 6 from Nutana, 3 from Regina and 3 from North Battleford.
There were entries in all six events, 55+ Women’s Doubles, 55+ Men’s Doubles, 55+ Mixed Doubles, 70+ Women’s Doubles, 70+ Men’s Doubles and 70+ Mixed Doubles. Three events had single team entries, two had two entries and one had three entries.
There were three draws conducted throughout the day. The three teams with single entries automatically qualified for Gold medals, however, the draws were set up for them to play against other so they would have the opportunity to bowl at the event.
Medal winners were: Gold: 55+ Women’s Doubles – Mayfair’s Beverley Coutts/Lorie Young; 55+ Mixed Doubles – Nutana’s Del McKenzie/Jia Xie; 70+ Men’s Doubles – North Battleford’s Vernon Iverson/Regina’s Al Hastings; 55+ Men’s Doubles – Nutana’s Paul Brennan/Norm Douville; 70+ Women’s Doubles – Regina’s Ingrid Riffel/Jessie Carlson and 70+ Mixed Doubles – Nutana’s Carolyn Jones/Robert Hackett.
Silver medal winners were 55+ Men’s Doubles – Mayfair’s Ron Kaye/Bruce MacDonald; 70+ Women’s Doubles – Mayfair’s Arlene Chermishnok/Hilda Voth; 70+ Mixed Doubles – Mayfair’s Harold Griffiths/Mary Glenister.
Bronze medal winners were 70+ Women’s Doubles- North Battleford’s Diana Griffiths/Arlene Walker.
Two teams, Mixed Doubles of Del McKenzie and Jia Xie and Men’s Doubles Paul Brennan and Norm Douville will be participating in the Canada 55+ Games in Kamloops, August 23-26, 2022 as the Saskatchewan representative for lawn bowling.
Thank you to the Bowls Sask Board of Directors for their financial support for this event. It was greatly appreciated by all the participants. Also, thank you to the Mayfair Lawn Bowling Club for hosting this event and the club members who assisted me in organizing this event.
